New York.Google is working on a secret project that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning to train code to write, fix, and update itself, Business Insider revealed.
The project is part of a broader push by Google toward so-called generative AI, which uses algorithms to create images, videos, code and more.
The post indicated that the plan could have profound implications for the future of the company and the developers who write code.
The project, which began within Alphabet’s X research unit and was codenamed Pitchfork, moved to Google’s Labs group of laboratories this summer, according to people familiar with the matter.
Pitchfork is now part of a new group at Labs called the “AI Developer Support Team,” which is led by Olivia Hatalsky, an X employee who has worked on Google Glass and several other “moonshot” projects.
Pitchfork was created to teach code to write and rewrite, according to internal materials seen by Business Insider.
The tool is designed to learn programming styles and write new code based on those learnings, according to people familiar with it and patents reviewed by the publication.
“The team is working closely with the research team,” a Google representative said. “They are working together to explore different use cases to help developers.”
Pitchfork’s original goal was to build a tool that could update the code base of Google’s Python programming language to a newer version, a company representative confirmed.
The goals of the plan changed over time to a general purpose system that could still reduce the need for humans to write and update code while maintaining code quality.
Google is working on several other AI code projects. Alphabet affiliate DeepMind has a system called AlphaCode that uses AI to generate codes; however, his current focus is on competitive coding or writing programs at a competitive level.
Google is also working on a tool similar to GitHub’s Copilot, which uses machine learning to generate code snippet suggestions as developers type.
