Once again Nikita Mazepin returns to center stage in the controversial debate on the possibility – or not – of Russian drivers to be able to compete in the world of motorsport in this particular historical era, in which the Moscow army invaded the sovereign state of Ukraine. The former Haas driver, who last year competed in F1 as a neutral driver (under the insignia of the Russian Auto Federation) due to the ban on using the flag of his native country for the events related to the doping scandals that exploded in Russia, was was on foot by his team a few weeks before the start of the new season. The episode had caused much discussion, so much so as to push the Mazepin family to sue the US team for allegedly unpaid compensation.
Mazepin had recently again addressed the delicate question of his nationality, claiming to don’t want to give it up only to return to competing at international level. Today, however, through his official Instagram profile, the son of the oligarch Dmitry Mazepin has once again adjusted his position. Nikita in fact wrote to be absolutely willing to compete as a neutral athlete – as requested by the FIA for drivers with a Russian license – exactly as happened in his only season held in the Circus. What Mazepin jr. said he is not available to do is to change citizenshipthus competing on behalf of another country.
This move, for example, was implemented by the third Ferrari driver Robert Shwartzman. The 23-year-old from the FDA academy, raised in Russia but born in Tel Aviv and with a double passport, had competed as a Russian athlete until last year. Since this season he has represented his native country, opting for the Israeli license. “Hello everybody! I just want to correct a statement that the media reported that I would refuse to compete under a neutral flag. It is not so – Mazepin wrote – what I wrote is that I do not consider the idea of changing citizenship in order to compete. I had and still have the will to compete as a neutral athlete. In fact, I did it last year in F1 without any problems “.
