He was also at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Genesis, the premium brand operating under the Hyundai umbrella. The Korean house showed its concept X Coupe Speediumfocusing on its specific way of looking to the future through high quality interiors.
Genesis proposed a particular design language in order to “amplify the fun aspect of the driving experience“. The interior of the X Speedium Coupé uses a classic Korean design principle known as “the beauty of white space“. Inspired by national architecture, the principle closely aligns with the ideology of minimalist design and is expressed through a pure formal language, punctuated by strong breaking elements. The asymmetrical layout, driver-oriented, is a continuation of the theme of the latest Genesis concept cars, in which all control systems and displays surround the driver. The instrument panel and floating center console envelop the driver’s cabin.
This effect is further accentuated by the contrasting color palette of the interior, which clearly distinguishes the driver’s area from the passenger compartment. The driver’s seating area is set in Pinegrove Green, which complements the Inje Green exterior color. The Monterey Gold contrast tone around the driver’s seat, a color inspired by the geographic scenery that runs along the Northern California coastalludes to the yellow flowers and golden sand found in the region.
Among other things, it’s not just about seating comfort and colors: Genesis is exploring the future of audio experiences through a new architecture. In collaboration with sound engineer Guk-il Yu, who heads Metal Sound Design, a company specializing in high-performance loudspeakers, the X Speedium Coupé features strategically placed speakers to fill the interior with rich sound. Tweeter, speakers, woofer and subwoofer follow the same strategy; in particular the aluminum tweeters, which emit high-pitched sounds, were made using a precision milling method to optimize performance.
The driver-centric cockpit has a curved OLED display. The vertical display on the right side of the driver’s seat features an integrated touch system with an optimized user interface design. The display includes the start button, as well as multimedia and vehicle control functions. Which is by no means minimalist, if not in terms of surfaces: it wouldn’t have been bad to see a few more ‘buttons’. The load compartment of the X Speedium Coupé is surmounted from belts to X, a detail inspired by the brand’s exclusive G-Matrix motif that underlines the dynamic experience of a coupe. This design feature was derived from the Genesis Mint prototype.
Another noteworthy detail is the leather: the quilted pattern on the leather seats and door trims gives the impression of sitting in a classic sports car. The material that covers the steering wheel was instead recovered from the leather of the used car seats. In total, two types of leather were used: vegetable tanned leather and a new innovative breathable. The vegetable tanned leather is treated with substances such as citrus and mimosas, and processed without chromium. Compared to normal leather, the breathable grain leather used in the upper part of the cabin requires less water and lower levels of chemicals to produce. The threads used in the finishing process are made from regenerated plastic, increasing the durability of the material and water resistance factors.
