The winter transfer market is already closed and now a new front is opening in the Dembélé case. The player refused to leave, he rejected the release letter, he does not want to renew either and therefore he is going to stay until the end of the season. The club’s position is clear, but now the one who has the ball on his court is Xavi Hernández, who will have to make a decision about the Frenchman: have him or leave him in the stands for four months? A crossroads but from a sporting point of view it should be clear, Xavi has to count on Dembélé.
The Frenchman is a first-team player like any other with a contract in force until June and he should not be deprived of playing football because he does not want to extend his bond beyond that date. The player will continue to receive his salary regardless of whether he plays or not, and since he is paid, it is better to try that he can contribute on the pitch.
When you have a player like Dembélé at your disposal, you have to take advantage of it. It’s not that he’s only going to change the direction of the team or win the Europa League, but he’s going to give you more solutions on the pitch than in the stands. At PSG, Mbappé is also in the last year of his contract, he has refused to renew it and no one at the Parc des Princes considered the possibility of leaving him in the stands for the entire season as a measure of pressure, and that they have a a more complete squad than Barcelona’s with Neymar, Messi or Di María among others.
If the president of Barcelona filled Dembélé with compliments telling him that he was better than Mbappé, they should treat him better and not separate him for not renewing. Xavi may be very happy with the new reinforcements that they have brought him, however this Barça is not in a position to waste players like Dembélé for reasons that are not sporting. Looking at the good of the team and the goals that Barcelona has this season, Xavi should have the French winger.
Barça has given the player a pulse and has lost him. Now they should step aside, swallow their pride and give Dembélé his place in the squad as one more instead of trying to tighten a rope that is already torn to pieces. When the season ends and their paths separate definitively, then the daggers can be thrown again but now the hostilities must stop for the good of the team and the best thing is that Xavi once again has the footballer.
