O MP-RS (Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul) fined 65 establishments for selling products at abusive prices in areas affected by the floods in the state. According to the agency, some places sold a gallon of 20 liters of water for R$80.
The majority of fines occurred in markets and gas stations, as well as pharmacies, water truck companies and gas and water retailers. At one of the stations, two employees were arrested. The reason for the arrest was not clarified.
According to the MP-RS, since May 4th, the task force was set up together with Gaeco (Special Action Group to Combat Crime). Until May 17th, 315 reports of abusive prices were investigated, in the cities of Porto Alegre, Gravataí, Viamão, Cachoeirinha, Canoas and Alvorada, in the Metropolitan Region.
REPORTING CHANNEL
Complaints arrived through the channel created by the institution (email [email protected] ) so that consumers could report cases of increases that occurred after the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul. In total, the MPRS has already received 680 complaints from across the State.
“We realize that consumers need to have a quick channel to report when they come across a product sold above the price, even more so in this time of crisis”says prosecutor Alcindo Luz Bastos da Silva Filho.
