Jannik returns to the field after the US Open. He does it in the only tournament where he has won more than once. More difficult to think of an immediate encore by Sonego after Metz
From the United States to Bulgaria. Jannik Sinner returns to the field after more than two weeks of the burning defeat with the then winner of the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz. There is no Spanish in Sofia, he will return to Astana in a few days.
One more reason to hope for yet another Bulgarian title from the South Tyrolean: it would be the third in a row. But watch out for the competition in a thick board of Italians, including Sonego, Musetti and a Fognini that should never be underestimated.
THE BOARD
–
Fresh back in the top-10, Sinner leads the scoreboard. Being the first seed, at the debut he can take advantage of the classic ‘bye’. Same goes for Pablo Carreno Busta, one that Jannik knows well having lost us in August in Canada. And even in that case the reaper dell’azzurro has filled his bulletin board. Symptom that when he loses, he is never with the newcomer. Musetti is also seeded (number 4), while in the upper part the eyes of the fans will mostly be turned towards the home favorite, Grigor Dimitrov. Lorenzo Sonego starts from the first round, fresh from success in Metz, and Fabio Fognini who avoided the Wawrinka bugbear, retired and replaced by the Australian Vukic.
THE MOMENT OF JANNIK
–
It is forbidden to make mistakes if you want a place in the Finals. The qualification in Turin was complicated for Sinner, but there is still a crack. And that pinch of light that can be glimpsed from the lock will remain lit only in case of confirmation of the title or of a final. Otherwise it might be really too late. The US Open proved that he can win with anyone, even more so in an ATP 250. On a surface – indoor hardcourt – which will always remain among his favorites due to its characteristics. If we then add the titles of 202o and 2021 – the last without losing a set – then it is right to create expectations.
FEE FOR THE TITLE
–
Expectations that go hand in hand with bookmakers’ odds. The seventh title of Sinner’s career is proposed at 2.75 on the Sisal Matchpoint board, at 3.00 on Bet365 and Goldbet. He chases Carreno Busta on Sisal and Bet365, respectively at 5.50 and 6.00, while the second favorite for Goldbet is the very young British Jack Draper. The host Dimitrov remains detached, settling around 11.00.
THE OTHER BLUES
–
Sonego has just triumphed in Metz, under almost similar conditions. He can annoy everyone but the second triumph within a week is only offered at 10.00 from the bookie. Looking at the ranking, he is the fourth favorite, but at high altitude he is far from the top: Musetti pays 16 times the stakes for the second title of the season and career after Hamburg. And then there is Fognini, on whom it is always difficult to make a prediction: the Taggiasco is given at 33.00.
