Eight mayors of cities located in Venezuela were politically disqualified this Wednesday (19), according to information from local independent media, citing data available on the website of the National Electoral Council (CNE), controlled by Chavismo and responsible for the elections.
According to information from the Venezuelan website Cocuyo Effectthese mayors had expressed their support for the presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, and had traveled to Caracas to meet with him before receiving the punishment.
The mayors are: Francisco Aguilar; Dilcia Rojas; Yohanthi Domínguez; Wuilmer Delgado; Cervando Godoy; Keyver Peña; Heriberto Materán and José Carrillo. In addition to those mentioned, two other opposition mayors, Josy Fernández and Elías Sayeh, had already been disqualified by the regime.
Keyver Peña, one of those disqualified, spoke out on his Facebook account, declaring that he was used to attacks for working for the “well-being of the people of Sucre”, his municipality (which is located in the province of the same name), and mentioned that disqualification has an “expiration date” and is of short duration.
After the CNE’s actions, the opposition candidate González Urrutia expressed his support for the disqualified mayors through his account on X (formerly Twitter).
“Our support for the 10 mayors of Trujillo and Nueva Esparta unfairly disqualified for supporting our candidacy. The growing persecution confirms that Venezuela has decided to change and will express this with determination this July 28th. We will continue to fight together for a country where no one is persecuted for thinking differently,” he wrote.
