The case has gained national prominence due to restrictions on abortion imposed by Ohio after the Supreme Court overturned its protection in June, something that presumably would have led the girl to go to the neighboring state, although Ohio authorities say it would have been able to abort without having to travel.

The president of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, referred to the case in public last week to attack his Republican rivalswhich control the state government in Ohio.
“Raped and pregnant for six weeks with ten years. Already traumatized and had to travel to another state. Imagine being that little girl,” Biden said.
The defendant and confessed perpetrator of the rape is Gerson Fuentes, who according to Immigration sources quoted by the conservative channel Fox News is a Guatemalan immigrant who is in the United States in an irregular situation.
Fuentes – who confessed to the police to have raped the girl on at least two occasions – has been set a bail of two million dollars and for the moment he remains detained in the jail in Franklin County (Ohio).
After the Supreme Court revoked the legal protection of abortion, Ohio activated a law
that was suspended and that prohibits most abortions when six weeks have passed or when the first heartbeat of the fetus is detected.
