The government of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced that Background checks will be expanded to purchase firearms in the countryin an attempt to close “legal loopholes” around sales at fairs and the internet.
The measure was announced by Vice President Kamala Harris, who heads the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
Now all gun sellers will have to do background checks, no matter where or how they sell their products.
“Currently, gun stores are required by law to do a background check (on buyers) on every sale,” Harris told reporters Thursday.
“But for decades, many people who sell guns in places other than traditional stores … have gotten away with not doing that verification,” he added.
“Now all gun sellers will have to do background checks, no matter where or how they sell their products.”
Gun violence is common in the United States, where there are more guns than people. Successive attempts to restrict its circulation have faced political resistance.
Harris said thousands of unlicensed dealers sell tens of thousands of guns each year without background checks on their buyers. And that among those who benefit from these legal loopholes are criminals and perpetrators of domestic violence.
“Under the new regulation, it does not matter whether guns are sold on the Internet, at gun shows or in a brick-and-mortar store,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.
“If you sell guns primarily for profit, you must have a license and conduct background checks,” Garland said.
A senior White House official said that The Biden government hopes that the new measure will be challenged in court by pro-gun groups.
“All of the big actions the president has taken to reduce gun violence have been questioned,” the official said. “We are confident that this is a legal measure,” he added.
In United States There were more than 40,000 gun-related deaths last year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
