UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, November 3, said he was shocked by reports of an Israeli strike on ambulances in the Gaza Strip.
“I am horrified by reports of an attack in Gaza on a convoy of ambulances near Al Shifa Hospital. The images of bodies strewn in the street outside the hospital are heartbreaking. But I do not forget the terrorist attacks carried out in Israel by Hamas, as well as the killings, mutilations and abductions, including of women and children,” the statement reads. statementpublished on the organization’s website.
The UN Secretary-General also said that UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) shelters were filled to almost four times their capacity and were being bombed. The morgues are overflowing. The organization is also concerned about the sanitary situation in Gaza and has observed an increase in morbidity and respiratory diseases, especially among children.
Earlier, on November 3, World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was shocked by reports of an attack on ambulances near Al-Shifa Hospital. He stressed that patients, healthcare workers, medical facilities and ambulances must be protected.
On the same day, it was reported that at least 15 people were killed in an Israeli attack on Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza. In addition, a humanitarian aid convoy transporting the wounded in three areas of Gaza City was hit.
This hospital had already come under fire on October 29th. Shortly before this, the Red Crescent reported that the Israeli authorities had again warned the organization of the need to evacuate people from this medical facility.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, when the Hamas movement subjected Israeli territory to massive rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, and also invaded the border areas in the south of the country and took hostages. That same day, Israel began retaliating against targets in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinians are seeking to return the borders between the two countries to the lines that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War. Palestine wants to create its own state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and make East Jerusalem its capital. Israel refuses the conditions set.
