Ukraine, Macron speaks to the nation: “I stay in touch with Putin”

During the TV speech to the nation on the war in Ukrainea, Emmanuel Macron confirmed that he is “in constant dialogue with Vladimir Putin since 2017”. The French president added: “Biden, the president of the United States, has expressed his opinion willingness to negotiateAnd. So Putin, alone and deliberately, giving up one by one all commitments made before the community of nations, has chosen war “.

Macron made it clear that the Russian president Vladimir Putin “chose war aloneor and in a deliberate way, reneging on its commitments. This war is not a conflict between NATO and the West on one side and Russia on the other “because, the president specified,” neither France, nor Europe, nor the Atlantic Alliance wanted this war and are not at war against Russia “. Macron then paid tribute to the Ukrainian people and their president: “Volodymyr Zelenski – he said – is at the head of his people with the face of honor, freedom, courage “.

During the live broadcast, Macron stated that the France “is not at war with Russia”. “Today we stand alongside all the Russians who, by refusing to wage an unworthy war in their name, have the spirit, the responsibility and the courage to defend peace and who make it known in Russia and elsewhere”, he added, referring to the Russian people.

“The international community has shown its unity”, assured Macron, recalling all the sanctions adopted against Russia. “We will continue to call for a ceasefire”, “we have adopted swift and proportionate sanctions against Russia and its leaders”, admitting however that “the next few days will be even tougher”. The French president reported the choice to maintain contact with Vladimir Putin to “prevent enlargement and the contagion of the conflict”.

With a grave face, Macron then stated that “the next few days of this unprecedented trial in decades will be even harder”. In conclusion, he added that “what is happening, these events will not only have immediate consequences for a few weeks. They are the sign of an epochal change. War in Europe no longer belongs to the history books. It is here, under our eyes“.
