A sprint by Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) opens the 62nd edition of the Tour of the Basque Country. After 165.4 km (from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Labastida) the Briton made the most of the train of his companions to outpace the Swiss Mauro Schmid (Soudal-Quick Step) and the Spanish Jon Aberasturi (Trek Segafredo) in the sprint. Richard Carapaz (Ef Education EasyPost) also placed: the 29-year-old Colombian, winner of the 2019 Giro d’Italia, finished in sixth place. First of the Italians Christian Scaroni (Astana), ahead of Andrea Bagioli (Soudal-Quick Step). For Hayter it is the victory number 17 in his career, the first of the season. Tomorrow the second stage, Viana-Leitza of 193.8 km.
