Carrying out the procedure for the admission of Ukraine to NATO is now untimely. This opinion was expressed on Friday, September 30, by Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Jake Sullivan.
“Now, in our opinion, the best way to support Ukraine is practical support “on the ground,” he said.
Sullivan believes that the process of joining the alliance should be undertaken at another time.
At the same time, he stressed that Washington does not refuse to support the policy of “open doors” for NATO.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky announced Ukraine’s fast track bid for NATO. According to him, in fact, Ukraine is already in NATO and meets the standards of the alliance.
Readers of the British newspaper Daily Mail reacted sharply to Zelensky’s intention to join NATO. Commentators recalled that the Ukrainian president did not want to negotiate with the Russian Federation, so they advised him to take part in the hostilities himself.
Also on Friday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he would hold an unscheduled press conference on September 30.
Earlier, on September 28, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said that NATO forces would take part in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine in the event of the use of nuclear weapons. At the same time, he stressed that so far no one has considered the possibility of its application.
Prior to that, on September 22, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba spoke about NATO’s desire to join Ukraine, answering a question about the country’s membership in the alliance.
Meanwhile, on August 29, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna, in an interview with Evropeiska Pravda, said that the country might get the opportunity to join NATO before the completion of the Russian special operation to protect Donbass.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region due to increased shelling by Ukrainian troops.
