The duration of the PCR test, which shows the presence of the COVID-19 virus in the body, will be reduced from 72 to 48 hours. This was stated by the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova. A fragment of the video recording of her speech was published in the official Telegram-channel of the Russian government.
This decision, according to Popova, was made against the background of the spread of a new, more dangerous, omicron strain of coronavirus. The head of Rospotrebnadzor clarified that modern test systems can detect not only the presence of a disease, but also the strain that a person is infected with.
According to the head of the department, free PCR testing at the entrance to Russia is organized for citizens of those countries where cases of infection with the omicron strain have been recorded. In particular, we are talking about South Africa, in which this variant of COVID-19 was first discovered.
The chief sanitary doctor of Russia, Anna Popova, also stated that the omicron strain in Russia has not yet been identified. She stressed that relevant research is constantly being carried out in the framework of monitoring the genetic structure of the virus.
At the moment, more than 9.6 million cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in Russia. 275 thousand patients have died, and 8.3 million have recovered and were discharged from hospitals.
