The Oath of Allegiance corresponds to the last stage you must go through before obtaining your citizenship, and it is one of the most important steps in the entire process. The government will tell you the office to which You must appear in elegant attire (you cannot wear jeans, shorts or flip flops) to take the oathas explained by the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on its official website.
During the ceremony, You will receive a script to recite, so you don’t need to memorize the words. By attending the ceremony, You must carry your permanent resident card (green card), your re-entry permit or refugee travel document if you have one, immigration documents and any other document requested by USCIS.
How to Apply for United States Citizenship
To apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization, you must be at least 18 years old, able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level, and be a person of good moral character. By meeting these requirements, must be part of one of the following groups:
- Prove that you are a legal permanent resident of the United States (have a “Green Card”) for at least five years
- Be married to a US citizen
- Serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces
- Be the child of a US citizen
If you meet the requested requirements, you must submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and pay the fees online. Then you must show up for your biometrics appointment (if applicable) and complete your naturalization exambefore take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
