British Climate Change Minister Graham Stewart resigned from the government on Friday, after eight years as a government minister, saying that this was the right time to step down.
The resigned minister added, in a letter to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, published on the social media platform “X”: “After serving as a minister for most of the past eight years, I have decided that it is time to step down.”
“I will continue to offer you my full support from the backbenches,” he stressed.
Sunak's office said Justin Tomlinson, a former secretary of state at the Department for Work and Pensions, will replace Stewart as climate secretary.
Sunak thanked Stewart for his efforts in supporting Britain's efforts to transition to clean energy, including the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
“I understand your desire to step down as minister,” Sunak said in a letter to Stewart, adding: “These jobs are very demanding, and I have worked in government almost continuously since 2016.”
Stewart, who was appointed climate minister in September 2022, has also held other positions at the Departments of State and Commerce.
