The Alfa Romeos of the future will have an aesthetic feature that the most attentive observers will certainly not be able to ignore: the positioning of the license plate. A change that will also concern the new generations of Giulia and Stelvio, and which will effectively put an end to a long tradition of the Biscione: goodbye to plates positioned in a staggered manner, from now on they will all be placed centrally.
Change the positioning of the license plate
An almost obligatory choice, dictated by the new European regulations on pedestrian safety. As mentioned, the end of a tradition: a significant number of Alfa Romeo models feature staggered license plates mounted on one of the front fenders, so as to allow Alfisti and others to see the iconic triangular grille of the Scudetto without any obstacle. A must started almost 70 years ago, with the Giulietta Spider of 1955, and which continues today with the current Giulia, Tonale and Stelvio. But in the future this will no longer be the case.
Security reasons
And Alfa Romeo’s number one designer, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanosconfirmed how this tradition will be stopped. “We can no longer position the license plate laterally due to approval regulations for pedestrian safety – his words reported by Autocar – Die-hard Alfa enthusiasts who think that an Alfa Romeo isn’t an Alfa Romeo without the license plate on the side won’t be happy, but there are plenty of nice Alfa Romeos throughout history that have the license plate in the center: I own an Alfetta and a 1968 Giulia which has a central license plate and is truly beautiful. This modification, moreover, will allow us to have symmetry, therefore I am happy: I’m one of those who likes the license plate in the center.”
The design of the future Alfa Romeo
Regardless of the placement of the license plate, the design of the next generations of Stelvio and Giulia has been definitively completed: the new Biscione SUV should debut during 2025, while the sedan will be the next year. “They are two fantastic models – concluded the head of Alfa Romeo design – It’s what people would expect from a Giulia in terms of sportiness, the coupé styling is fantastic, and that’s all I’ll tell you right now. Their electric versions will feature a new interpretation of the Scudettowe will put a large closed logo to demonstrate that we are proud of it.”
