Sixteen people were injured in any way during the incident. Ten of them had gunshot wounds, and five are in critical but stable condition. This is reported by the New York Fire Department. It is not yet clear how the other six received their injuries.
The search is complicated by the fact that the security camera at the subway station may not work, Mayor Eric Adams said. There would be “a malfunction with the camera system at that particular station,” he told WCBS 880 radio.
“We stand with this community and we say: no more. No more shootings,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said at a joint press conference with the NYPD. “It has to stop. It has to stop now.” Police are looking for a man believed to be wearing a gas mask and orange safety jacket.
‘Smoke, blood and people screaming’
The shooting took place at the 36th Street subway station near Sunset Park. Photos and videos of the incident show people caring for bloodied passengers lying on the floor of the train station. The air is filled with smoke. ,,My tram door opened because of a distress signal. There was smoke and blood and people were screaming,” eyewitness Sam Carcamo told US radio station 1010 Wins.
An eyewitness video shows people lying on the platform in what appear to be small pools of blood, while people are called over the loudspeaker to leave the platform and board a train. In another video, passengers on the tram rush out as the alarm goes off and someone yells, “Call 911!” At least 11 people are being treated at two local hospitals.

The incident happened during the morning rush hour. Authorities took action after a report of smoke in the metro station and a report that a person had been shot. Police are investigating whether the smoke was caused by a smoke bomb. The injured were assisted by other travelers, can be seen in a photo of the accident site. Schools in the area are closed.
Brooklyn resident Danny Mastrogiorgio had just dropped off his son at school when he saw a crowd, several of them injured, rushing up the stairs of the subway station. At least two had visible leg wounds, she said. “It was crazy,” he told AP news agency. “Nobody knew exactly what was going on.”
President Joe Biden has since been briefed on the latest developments. The White House is in contact with NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell, among others.
