The previous record was held by Sweden by Sarah Sjöström in 2016 at the Rio Olympics he swam 55.48.
Walsh clocked his record time in the semifinals of the Olympic qualifiers in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Walsh had not managed to break the 56-second mark before Saturday. However, on Saturday morning, the 21-year-old promising swimmer scored a time of 55.94 seconds in the qualifying rounds.
In Sunday’s final, Walsh will be aiming for a spot on the US Olympic team heading to Paris.
Responsible for the previous US record Torri Huske was also in the ME mood on Saturday. Huske’s speed was record-breaking for 50 meters in the first semi-final, but his result was 55.79 seconds in the end.
