The World Health Organization said, on Wednesday, that the sub-mutant (XPB. 1.5) from Omicron, which in turn mutated from the emerging corona virus, may be causing the current increase in HIV infections.
The organization added that a technical meeting was held on January 5 to assess the public health risks of this sub-mutant and that “based on its genetic characteristics and early growth rate estimates, XBB1.5 may contribute to an increase in infections.”
But it said it had “low confidence” in the assessment because most of the data came from just one country, the United States, which provided more than 80 percent of the sequence data.
