The last image of Miguel Ángel López dates from four months ago, when he left the Vuelta a España without the endorsement of the technicians, he got into a scandalous dispute with Movistar and finally negotiated his departure from the squad.
‘Supermán’ López broke the contract that united him with Eusebio Unzué’s rope for two more years, and days later he confirmed his return to Astana, a group that opened the doors for him in 2015.

This Saturday, at the age of 28, the boyacense starts his seventh season with the cast of Alexander Vinokurov in the Vuelta a Murciaa one-day test over 183 kilometers, with which he opens the year with his sights set on the mountainous Giro d’Italia, his main objective.
Spain, the best country to win
The rider from Pesca, Boyacá, hopes to revalidate his 21 wins in his career and opens 2022 in a Spanish competition, country that has seen him win ten times.
López has won two titles in the World Tour, the highest category of cycling, by winning the Tour of Switzerland in 2016 and the Tour of Catalonia in 2019.
Similarly, adjusts five stage wins in the category, three in the Vuelta a España, one in the Tour de France and one more in Catalonia.
The Colombian cyclist has been on the podium in two majors, when he was third in the Giro and in the Vuelta in 2018 –his best year–, but from then on he has ‘wasted’ the option of being one of the three best runners in one of the three-week competitions.
The Giro will be a good opportunity for him to go for a title, because the route this time is very mountainous, he only has 26 km on the clock, his greatest weakness, and he will have strong rivals, but they will not be Tadej Pogacar or Primoz Roglic, the Slovenians dominating the peloton.
Murcia is a test that Colombian cycling has already won with Álvaro Mejía (1992), Víctor Hugo Peña (2022) and Nairo Quintana (2012).
López faces a difficult year from today, and the slogan is to win to leave behind that bad image of his exit through the back door of Movistar.
