Designers and database administrators were the professionals with the highest salary increase and growth in the number of workers in Brazil in the last 12 years. This is what a survey by IDados consultancy researcher Ana Tereza Pires, a specialist in labor and education economics, shows.
The study, based on data from the IBGE Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad), reveals the professions with diplomas that gained and lost the most professionals, and also those that had the biggest increases or reductions in the average salary.

Designers and database administrators were the profession with the greatest positive variation in both salaries (91%) and employed professionals (6,488%). See the rankings below:

“What caught my attention most in terms of variation were the professions linked to technology and the financial market”, he says Ana Tereza Pires, the researcher at IDados.
As shown in the ranking, program and application developers (software) and mathematicians, actuaries and statisticians were also among the 15 biggest positive salary variations. The number of people employed in both professions also grew: 640% and 3,292%, respectively.

The researcher highlights the curious case of the profession of Internet page (web) and multimedia developers, the second biggest growth in the number of employed people, but also one of the few professions in the technology area where there has been a drop in salary. The variation in the period was -60%, perhaps indicating some career saturation.
Another highlight was civil engineering, an area that was on the rise in the past and now features among the biggest declines in average pay. See the ranking of professions with the highest negative salary variation:

Many of the professions in the ranking with the biggest salary reduction also appear on the list of those that saw the biggest shrinkage in the number of employed people.
In general, occupations tend to have year-on-year growth in the number of professionals, due to the increase in population and access to higher education. However, in some careers, such as teachers, there was even a drop in the number of workers.
“People are looking less for these low-paying professions. There is already a market direction to look for more professions that are in demand and pay more”, says the researcher.

How the research was carried out
The data used were extracted from the latest Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and compared the average salary of occupations that require a diploma in the 1st quarter of 2024, compared to 2012.
Professions that employ less than 1000 workers were disregarded, “to avoid occupations that are statistically irrelevant”, says the researcher.
