After Tesla, BMW and Stellantis are also trying to strike a deal with panasonic for the supply of cylindrical battery cells. The Japanese company specializes in the production of cells of this type, it is no coincidence that it represents one of the main suppliers of the electric car manufacturer led by Elon Musk, but not only that: the Wall Street Journal reports how several other companies are trying to start a cooperation with Panasonic, with the aim of building plants in North America.
New plant in North America
Stellantis’ strategy is also moving in this direction: the group born from the merger between FCA and PSA has reported that it wants to manage three new battery plants in North America, for this reason according to some anonymous sources cited by Autonews it would be in talks with Panasonic. We recall that the Italian-French group has already formalized a battery plant in Canada, in collaboration with LG Energy Solution, and one in Indiana, in this case together with Samsung SDI: the announcement relating to the location that will host the third plant is expected by the end of June.
Early negotiation
But at what stage are the talks between Stellantis and Panasonic? At the moment still in the initial stages, there are still several details that need to be agreed and sorted out before a final deal is reached. For example, it hasn’t been decided yet where it will be built the new joint production plant: it will be a key element for a possible white smoke.
BMW tries too
Like Stellantis, also BMW could soon reach an agreement with Panasonic for the supply of batteries. A sudden change of strategy for the German giant, which initially stated that it would work with the US division of the Chinese Envision AESC, before partially backtracking due to the political tensions between the Asian country and the United States which made it more difficult for the Asian country’s battery makers to operate in North America. For its part, BMW has confirmed that it is in talks with several suppliers for potential battery supply agreements, without specifying which ones.
