Elon Musk has updated the Starship, the spaceship that one day wants to transport humans to Mars. Each flight will cost less than 10 million dollars and the rocket can be used every 6 to 8 hours.
SpaceX’s last update on its Starship spacecraft was at the end of 2021, when it postponed the tests of orbital flights to March 2022. Elon Musk gave a new presentation of the spacecraft, outlining a cost plan, availability of his rocket for multiple daily flights and even shared a video with the company’s vision for Starship.

Elon Musk claims that each Starship flight could cost less than $10 million. His system consists of the spaceship that is transported to space aboard the Super Heavy rocket. SpaceX’s strategy is to reuse the Super Heavy, as it does with the Falcon 9, making them available as quickly as possible.
The idea is to launch a Starship into space, return to the planet and dock in its launch tower. The tower will have arms that “hug” the rocket, immediately starting maintenance work for the next flight. Elon Musk says the ship needs at least one orbit, sometimes three, before it returns. Each orbit is nine minutes.

In the company’s forecast, Elon Musk said that the Super Heavy will make six-minute flights in total, with two going to take to the sky and the other four to return to base. In total, it will then take six to eight hours to prepare the spacecraft for the next flight. This means that three flights can be made a day with the same spacecraft.
The boosters are ready to be reused every hour, taking just half an hour to refill. Elon Musk says the key to humanity getting off the planet to explore Mars is quickly reusing systems. “To make science fiction less and less fiction”, were some of the words of the tycoon, also pointing out that the US budget for investment in space was 0.36%. “I’m not asking to spend the entire budget on space, but maybe 1%?” he added.
In cooperative terms, Elon Musk said the Super Heavy rocket is more than twice as powerful as a Saturn V, the largest ever launched into space. It currently consists of 29 raptor engines, but could be upgraded to 33. The company is currently developing the second generation Raptor, with a different design, which stands out for costing about half the value to build, requiring fewer parts. Its production capacity is currently at five to six a week, but could soon reach seven.
In total, Elon Musk said that a Starship flight could cost less than $10 million, expected to be two or three years from now. Compared to Falcon 9, each launch costs around 60 million dollars. However, the company has yet to get approval from the FAA regulator, which is likely to take place in March. At the time, he hopes to have a prototype ready for orbital flight testing.
