Today we must remember Fred Roosfilm producer of Francis Ford Coppola’s films, a piece of history in the sector.
The historian producer passed away on Saturday 18 May at the age of 89, a few days after his birthday. Fred Roos, winner of an Oscar for the film “The Godfather – Part Two”, collaborated for a long time with the highly appreciated director. Among his latest projects was the film “Megapolis”, recently presented at the Cannes Film Festival.
The collaboration between Francis Ford Coppola and Fred Roos led to the creation of numerous films, most of which inevitably became cult films. While creating the documentary “Hearts of Darkness,” which explores behind the scenes of “Apocalypse Now,” Roos worked alongside Coppola and his wife Eleanor, who also recently passed away.
Between films produced by Fred Roos there are “The Conversation”, “The Godfather – Part II”, “Apocalypse Now”, “The Dream”, “The Boys on 56th Street”, “Rusty the Wild”, “Cotton Club”, “Tucker: The Man and His Dream,” “The Godfather: Part Three,” “Sunday of Youth” and “Greek.” With Sofia Coppola, he produced films such as “The Virgin Suicides,” “Lost in Translation,” “Marie Antoinette,” “Somewhere,” “Bling Ring,” “The Beguiled,” “On The Rocks” and “Priscilla ”.
Francis Ford Coppola wanted to remember the friend and collaborator, in practice, of a life of cinema, writing: “Fred Roos was a lifelong friend and collaborator, he truly loved cinema. I remember once telling him we should get more female directors and he came with Martha Coolidge and Susan Seidelman. He was a talent and we will miss him.”
