The first objective of the owners of the Atlético Huila with its new owners, the same ones as the successful Independiente del Valle, it was not fulfilled. The team was relegated to B this Monday after losing 1-0 against América.
A goal from Carlos Darwin Quintero, in the 77th minute, forced the Opita project to start from the bottom, in the second division. A scenario that, however, was within the possibilities.
“When we met Huila, we knew their needs. What we have to do is bring a training, education, and nutrition plan, which are going to be very common words in our lexicon, to create a well-rounded footballer. “This is going to take time,” Maruan Issa, president of Huila, had told EL TIEMPO when they took office.
The burden of the first semester (last, with 18 points) was very difficult to overcome. Despite hiring more than 15 players and a change of coach on the fly (Diego Corredor for Néstor Craviotto, Huila couldn’t get up. And the plummets of Once Caldas, Envigado and Jaguares gave him artificial respiration.
Likewise, the second semester campaign was very poor. Although at one point in the tournament the team threatened to leave the relegation zone, the finish was weak: He did not win in the last eight days.
It is the fourth descent of Huila. It had already fallen in 1996, and in recent years it became an elevator: it went down in 2019, it went up in 2021, it went away after six months, it went up last year and now it is going down again.
The resignation of Diego Corredor, Huila coach
“We must thank the players for their effort. I apologize to the fans, to the managers. I take responsibility, the goal was to add 50 percent plus one. Along the way you encounter adversity that begins to affect your spirit, the injuries undermined the team,” Racer said.

“They called me from the three relegation teams, but I came here because there was a project. Here there is the possibility of raising our heads and making ourselves stronger. I take this opportunity to send a message to teacher Harold (Rivera, coach of Unión Magdalena, who also went to B), we were trained together and today we both have to live through this situation,” added the coach.
President Issa appeared at the press conference to support the coach. “To the fans, who have followed us so much, we offer a very sincere apology from the bottom of our hearts. But this doesn’t stop, this continues, we are going to try to get out of this situation as soon as possible.”
