SalaryHow much do you earn? We ask a Dutch person that every week. Today: Sasha (22) is studying business administration and working. He does this 14 hours a week at a supermarket as a shift leader, 2 hours a week at a tutoring organization as a tutor and 20-25 hours at his own companies in web design and marketing.
What do you earn?
“All in all, I earn 3460 euros net. I’ve made a fairly comprehensive spreadsheet. I like the overview and the insight I get with it. That way I can see how much is going out and how much is coming in.”
Why do you have so many different jobs?
“I just like it. I don’t like to sit still. It’s a bit of ambition, I think. The reason I stick to the supermarket is that it is nice in terms of security. Shame to give up.”
Happy with?
,,I earn more than the average student, but it would be nice to earn a little more. As it is now, I’m quite pleased. Earning more is also working harder, in the end.”
Have you negotiated your salary?
,,At the supermarket I earn 17.59 euros per hour. This has not been negotiated, but is stipulated in the collective labor agreement. And I’m happy about that. The work as a tutor is on a performance basis. The more people get tutored, the more I get paid. I link the students to tutors and for that I receive 2.20 euros per lesson. Even if a school needs assistance with surveillance for 40 hours a week, I will be paid EUR 2.20 40 times. On average, I receive 250 euros per month.”
In my own companies I do most of the negotiating. Sometimes I get 40 euros per hour, other times I charge 150 euros for something and it is only 5 minutes of work in terms of time. I do one company as a freelancer and that comes out at 1500 per month. The other company I do together with my best friend and that is a VOF. One month it is 400 and the other 700 euros.”
Are you already working on your retirement?
“I save most of my income. Anything left over after the rent and the food goes into the savings account. Usually that is about 2000 euros per month. I am also investing. Every month I put in 100 to 150 euros. I want to spend even more time investing in the future.”
What are your wishes for the future?
,,At least continue as I do now. I still have 1.5 years to study. I want to do another master’s and I don’t think I’m going for a PhD, but who knows.
I also want to stay happy. It may be that I don’t always like it, that hard work and the amount. Until now it has always been worth it. Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does make things a bit easier, although I like to be frugal. It gives peace of mind.”
