KIEV (Reuters) – The Ukrainian army said two soldiers were killed and four wounded on Saturday in airstrikes by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, where an escalation in violence this week has raised fears of a trigger for Russian military action.
Ukraine’s army said on its Facebook page that it had recorded 70 ceasefire violations by separatists since the start of the day, following 66 cases in the previous 24 hours.
Separatists opened fire on more than 30 settlements along the front line, using heavy artillery, which was banned by an agreement that seeks to cool the conflict, the army said.
Separatist officials accused Ukraine in the Telegram of bombing areas controlled by separatists and said they had to respond accordingly.
Incidents of explosions along the line dividing government forces from separatists have spiked this week in what the Ukrainian government called a provocation but vehemently denied Russian suggestions that Kiev could launch an offensive in eastern Ukraine.
