I am Maurizio Sarri's resignation as Lazio coach is official. His place on the bench will be taken by deputy Giovanni Martusciello. The Biancoceleste club announced it in a note. “SS Lazio announces that Maurizio Sarri has resigned as head coach of the first team. The Company thanks the coach for the goals achieved and for the work carried out, wishing him the best human and professional fortunes. At the same time, the Club communicates that have decided to entrust the technical guidance to Giovanni Martusciello“.
Sarri's story on the Lazio bench
Sarri's adventure on the Lazio bench ends after two and a half years of ups and downs. His history with the Biancoceleste begins on 9 June 2021, when he replaces Simone Inzaghi, who moved to Inter. The Tuscan coach arrives in the capital after a year's break following the season with Juventus, which ended with the Scudetto in August in the year of the pandemic and the dismissal decided by the Juventus club after the elimination against Lyon in the round of 16 of Champions League final.
The first official match arrives in 'his' Empoli on 21 August with a 3-1 success. In his first season in the shadow of the Dome, Sarri finished in 5th place with 64 points, the result of 18 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats. In the Europa League, Lazio exited the scene in the round of 32 against Porto, after a 2-2 draw at the Olimpico the Portuguese won 2-1 at 'Do Dragao'. In the Italian Cup, Milan stopped Sarri's run in the quarter-finals with a clear 4-0.
The 2022-2023 season is clearly the best at the helm of Lazio for the former Napoli coach. In the championship, Immobile and his teammates finished in 2nd place with 74 points (22 wins, 8 draws and 8 defeats) and returned to the Champions League. Among the best satisfactions were the two derbies won and the victory at the 'Maradona' against Napoli, who dominated the championship.
In Italian Cup the stop is still in the quarterfinals at the hands of Juventus who won 1-0 at the Allianz Stadium. The season in the Europa League was less happy. Lazio finished third in their group and were relegated to the Conference League. Even in the third European competition there is little glory: elimination in the round of 16 at the hands of Dutch team AZ Alkmaar, winners 2-1 in both the first leg and the second leg.
The 2023-2024 season is a year of ups and downs. Lazio has an excellent run in the Champions League, where they top the group as second in group E behind Atletico Madrid with 10 points (3 wins, one draw and two defeats). They exited the scene in the round of 16 against Bayern Munich but took away the satisfaction of beating the Bavarians 1-0 in the first leg at the Olimpico, before losing 3-0 in the return leg at the Allianz Arena.
Lazio is still in the running in the Italian Cup, where they will have to play the two semi-finals with Juventus in April. The path in the championship is decidedly disappointing with the Biancocelesti ninth in the standings with 40 points (12 wins, 4 draws and 12 knockouts) and currently out of the European Cups for next season.
