Italian show
It is useless to deny it: the spectacular duel seen in the last laps of the Italian Grand Prix, in Monza, between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc is having – unfortunately – a ‘external’ flap to the track. At the end of the race, the two directly involved did not make any controversy and indeed, they both guaranteed that they had a lot of fun. The duel was, by all accounts, very tough but also very fair. More than the battle itself, however, what is generating a lot of discussion in the media in these hours is the fact that that Ferrari has allowed its drivers to fight freely.
Diversity of views
In Spain in particular, where already Fred Vasseur’s management of the team has long been seen as excessively Leclerc-centric, there was no shortage of criticism. Many have seen in Leclerc’s attacks on Sainz the risk of ruining a weekend that was certainly the best of the season for the Madrid-born driver. The fact that on other occasions and with reversed positions Sainz had been prevented from attacking his Monegasque companion did not go to certain observers. The real news, however, is that the ‘pepper’ was not spread only by the Iberian media, not new to controversies of this type, but directly from Sainz’s father, Carlos Sr.
Papa Sainz speaks
The two-time world rally champion and three-time Dakar winner, who in Spain is practically a living legend like Fernando Alonso, spoke to the microphones of DAZN after the race, launching a few slight but rather clear digs at the Ferrari management. The argument, needless to say, is precisely that of no team orders aimed at preserving the position of the son on the podium. “It’s curious – said Sainz Sr. – it is strange that sometimes they can be attacked and sometimes not. Sometimes they are free to fight each other and sometimes they are not“.
“I kind of knew what the movie was going to be like – continued the Iberian champion – except maybe the last few laps. I didn’t expect those. I knew the two Red Bulls would arrive very strong and that Charles would be there. It was a very good weekend. From the first minute [Carlos] he was there and getting on the podium with Ferrari at Monza is a great result“. In the end though, for real racers which is, even dad Sainz could not that appreciate the way his son kept his third place finish: “Now that it’s all over, I prefer it to be like this, without any kind of order or anything. He deserved it. Congratulations“. And now the challenge moves to the championship, where Sainz is currently fifth, +6 from Leclerc.
