The Venâncio Aires Health Department confirmed this Tuesday (May 21, 2024) the 2nd death from leptospirosis in Rio Grande do Sul. The victim, a 33-year-old man, lived in Venâncio Aires, a city that is approximately 185 kilometers from the capital Porto Alegre.
According to reports from family members, the man had contact with contaminated flood waters, but took precautions such as wearing protective boots. This month, the municipality has already confirmed 2 other cases of the disease, but without records of deaths so far.
The first death from the disease was recorded in Travesseiro, in Vale do Taquari. The victim was a 67-year-old man. To date, there are 19 confirmed cases of the disease across the state.
Leptospirosis is transmitted through contact with dirty water that mixes with urine from infected animals, such as rats. The disease causes symptoms such as fever, weakness, headaches and body aches, especially in the calves, as well as chills.
Signs of infection generally appear between five and 14 days after infection, and may appear up to 30 days later.
