Pistorius’ Bundeswehr is suffering from a lack of personnel. For Bavaria’s Prime Minister Söder, only a “master plan” can fix this.
Munich – Markus Söder applies gentle pressure Boris Pistorius from: Bavaria’s Prime Minister has now spoken out in favor of quick steps to reintroduce compulsory military service. “A master plan for the introduction of compulsory military service is needed quickly,” said Söder Picture on Sunday (BamS). CSU boss Söder stated that the SPD Federal Defense Minister must “quickly present when and how many soldiers Germany needs and how modern conscription can be designed.” This also requires a financial concept.
The CDU wants to gradually return to compulsory military service in order to armed forces to strengthen. This is what it says in their new policy program. A recent survey by the opinion barometer “MDRfragt” showed that the majority of young people reject the CDU’s conscription plans.
Pistorius said the following during a visit to the USA: “I am convinced that Germany needs some form of conscription” – a clear signal to former US President Donald Trump. He caused a stir in February when he criticized the fact that some NATO alliance partners “only pay a fraction”.
CSU boss Söder for higher defense spending
There were calls for a quick reintroduction of compulsory military service Bams also Bundeswehr Association chief André Wüstner. It is no longer a question of whether conscription will be reintroduced, but “only a question of how,” said Wüstner. In particular, according to him, it would be good if “as a first step we could carry out the recording and sampling again as quickly as possible”.
Söder spoke to the BamS also for a significant further increase in the defense budget in Germany. “The clear goal for the next budgets must be to reserve not just two percent of gross domestic product, but three percent for defense,” said Söder.
Pistorius wants to make a proposal on the future of compulsory military service at the end of May
In Germany, the application of compulsory military service was suspended in mid-2011. However, the legal basis for this remains. Despite a personnel offensive by the Bundeswehr, the force shrank to 181,500 soldiers last year. Pistorius is now letting – also under the impression of the Ukraine war – examine different models of compulsory service. Pistorius wants to present a proposal on the future of compulsory military service by the end of May at the latest.
“If Söder’s wishes go, then after the next federal election in Berlin a grand coalition of the CDU/CSU and SPD will rule again,” he commented Munich Mercury and drew the conclusion: There would then be a majority for the reintroduction of compulsory military service. (frs with AFP)
