North American government launches exhibition in Brasília that will tour 20 Brazilian cities with images from the 2 countries
The US Embassy opened the exhibition “Intertwined Roots: 200 years of friendship transforming the future” on Tuesday (April 9, 2024), with 35 photographs of the country and Brazil. It is part of the celebrations of the bicentenary of diplomatic relations between the 2 countries.
The exhibition is free and will be on display until May 4th at the English school gallery Thomas Jefferson House in Asa Sul, in Brasília. The place is open from 8am to 7pm, from Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 12pm on Saturdays. From May 13th to June 8th, he will be at the Casa Thomas Jefferson unit in Asa Norte, also in Brasília.
The exhibition will visit 20 Brazilian cities until the end of 2025.
Some of the cities are these:
- Belo Horizonte,
- Manaus,
- Bethlehem,
- Rio de Janeiro,
- Salvador,
- Recife and
- London.
The exhibition is curated by the professor and photography coordinator at the Senac-SPJoão Kulcsár.
The images were organized to highlight similar aspects of the 2 countries. There are, for example, old photos of Ellis Islandin New Jersey, USA, the first stopping point for European immigrants in the USA at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
Alongside the photos of Ellis Island, there are old images of the Immigration Museum, in Sao Paulo. It operates in the location that was the Immigrant Hostel, which at the time fulfilled the same function as Ellis Island in the USA.
There are also side-by-side photos of groups from the USA and Brazil, such as indigenous people and people of African descent.
