Since the beginning of the pandemic, still in 2020, masks have been widely publicized as an important item in protecting against the coronavirus. Now, um new graphic from The Wall Street Journal offers a clue as to why cloth masks may not prevent the spread of the Ômicron variant.
THE graphic – what it was widely shared on social media this week – shows how long it takes for someone to become infected with Covid-19 whether they are wearing a certain type of mask and talking to someone wearing a specific type of mask, or not.

- The graph includes how long it would take for people wearing nothing, cloth masks, surgical masks and N95 masks to be infected by those wearing the same type of mask.
- All in all, the graph shows that wearing an N95 mask offers the most protection. In fact, someone would be protected for 2.5 hours if they wore N95 masks and were talking to someone without a mask.
However, the graph – which comes from 2021 – is a clear sign that cloth masks will be less effective than before. The chart said that Ômicron can spread faster and faster than the 2021 variants.
Experts have been talking about this for some time. For example, the Dr. Asha Shajahanmedical director of Community Health at Beaumont Grosse Pointe in Detroit, told the network Fox 2 Detroit, United States, that cloth masks do not prevent the omicron variant.
“You have to make sure it’s at least a three-layer surgical mask or an N-95 or higher”she said. “We want to make sure it’s not a cloth mask. A cloth mask does not provide the protection you need.”
But masks in general may not offer enough protection against Omicron because it spreads so fast. The WSJ chart shows that there is little protection for long periods of time. AND Dr. William Schaffner professor of health policy and infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, told Health that Ômicron produces more viruses, making people’s safety more difficult.
“Omicron produces more viruses, even than delta,” Schaffner told Health . “Thus, the ability of masks to stop or reduce forward and backward transmission is also reduced.”
