North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test launch of two cruise missiles from a submarine, state media reported Monday.
North Korea's official news agency reported that two Polhoasal-3-31 missiles “flew into the sky over the East Sea to strike the target island” on Sunday, adding that Kim “directed” the launch.
The Polhoasal-3-31 missile is a new generation of strategic cruise missiles that Pyongyang said it tested for the first time on Wednesday, launching several missiles toward the Yellow Sea.
The agency added that the submarine test on Sunday “did not have any impact on the security of a neighboring country and was not related to the regional situation,” noting that Kim “expressed his great satisfaction” with the launch.
The South Korean army announced on Sunday that it had detected the launch of cruise missiles near the waters surrounding the Sinpo area in North Korea.
Cruise missiles have jet propulsion and fly at a lower altitude than more advanced ballistic missiles, making them more difficult to detect and intercept.
