Nils van der Poel has broken the world record in the 5000 meters at the World Cup competitions in Salt Lake City. With 6.01.56, the Swede narrowly fell below the old top time of Ted-Jan Bloemen from Canada of 6.01.86.
Patrick Roest was second with 6.04.41. The Jumbo-Visma skater stayed with a flat race just above his own personal best of 6.03.70 and set his second time ever in the 5000 meters. Jorrit Bergsma came in against Roest at some distance to 6.09.94. He finished sixth.
Van der Poel saw his opponent Alexander Rumyantsev leave hard, but took the initiative after two laps. With all laps low in 28 seconds, he dived under the schedule of the time that Bloemen set in 2017. Only in the last laps did the Swede give in to the schedule of the world record, but at the finish he had 0.3 seconds left.
Bloemen did not come close to Van der Poel’s top time in the final stage against the Italian Davide Ghiotto and let it run. Ghiotto was third with 6.07.27.
Van der Poel himself called it a race that was not completely in balance. He started slow and his first lap didn’t have the right speed either. “I tried to compensate for that with the second round and I had to recover from that,” he told NOS. “We didn’t know what to expect and just went for it and saw where it would lead.”
Kars Jansman drove in the first stage to a personal best of 6.15.56. The 26-year-old skater finished tenth. Marwin Talsma was a fraction slower with 6.15.84 and finished twelfth.
