The New York Police said in a tweet on its Twitter account that the suspect was named Frank James, and everyone who had information about him requested to report to the police as soon as possible.
Officials said a masked gunman threw a smoke grenade and then fired a shot at a New York subway car, injuring 16 people and causing chaos.
Ketsant Sewell, the police chief in New York City, said 10 people were shot, without saying how the others were injured.
Sewell added that the gunman is still at large, and that the incident is not yet investigated as an act of terrorism, but she did not rule out anything as a motive behind the attack.
Video footage showed smoke rising from the train carriage as it entered the 36th Street station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood. The occupants of the carriage, who were trapped inside, rushed to the sidewalk when its doors opened, as some of them fell to the ground, and the pictures showed blood stains on the sidewalk.
“This morning, as a train bound for Manhattan was waiting to enter Terminal 36, a person on this train put on what appeared to be a gas mask, took a package out of their suitcase and opened it,” Sewell said at a news conference.
She added, “At this moment, the train started to fill with smoke. Then (the gunman) fired bullets, wounding several people in the metro and on the platform.”
The police chief added that it was reported that the suspect was a plump black male, wearing a green construction-type jacket.
Outside the 36th Street station, in an area famous for landmarks such as China City and the Statue of Liberty, authorities closed down a dozen or so apartment blocks and closed off the surrounding area with yellow tape.
The White House and the Department of Justice announced that President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland have been updated on the incident. The White House said presidential staff were in close contact with New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the Police Commissioner to provide any assistance.
