Young Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna broke the world record for the discus throw competition, which had stood for 38 years, by achieving 74.35 metres, during a meeting in Ramola, Oklahoma, USA.
The 21-year-old, who won silver in the 2022 World Cup and bronze in last year's World Cup, achieved the world record during his fifth attempt in the event designated exclusively for discus throwing.
Alkina surpassed the mark of 74.08 meters achieved by Jurgen Schulte on June 6, 1986, when he was defending the colors of East Germany.
Until the last achievement, Schulte's record was the oldest record in athletics as a whole, superior in terms of its standing to American Jesse Owens' long jump record, which stood for 25 years and 79 days.
Alekhna is the son of former Olympic discus champion Virgilius Alekhna, who won gold at the 2000 and 2004 Games.
