Relevance has been taken by the morenista mayor, José Paz López Elenes, of the municipality of Badiraguato, Sinaloa, regarding the creation of a “Museum of Drug Trafficking”, in order to recognize all the famous people from the town.
Badiraguato, known as the “Cradle of Drug Trafficking”, is a nickname that has been hard earned, as it is the place where some of the greatest Mexican drug lords were born, such as Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, alias El Chapo Guzmán; Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, alias Don Neto; Rafael Caro Quintero; the Beltrán Leyva brothers, Carlos, Héctor alias El Ingeniero, Alfredo alias El Mochomo, and Marcos Arturo alias El Jefe de Jefes; Juan José de Jesús Esparragoza Moreno, alias El Azul; as well as Ovidio Guzmán López, alias El Ratón, among others.
Although the idea of a museum about criminals is not new, since there are some famous museums in the United States of America on the subject, such as the Mafia Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada, or the Al Capone Museum in Chicago; It is my opinion that there are great differences regarding the Sinaloa museum.
First, the culture of violence and drug trafficking that has cost so many lives in our country is extolled. Netflix’s current series on Jeffrey Dahmer, The Milwaukee Cannibal, which has gone viral, is about a serial killer who “just” killed 17 people. A very different number from the more than 35,600 homicides that occurred in 2021 in Mexico, that is, just under 100 homicides per day.
Second, in the aforementioned museum cases, the criminals alluded to are dead; not so in this situation, in which many of the “famous capos” from the region are free or in prison, and there is even the matter of El Azul, who is “presumed” dead, without knowing for sure if it is so But it does not end there, there are direct relatives of some of the aforementioned capos, who currently live in the region. Media was the case of the visit of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Constitutional President of our country, to the Municipality, as well as his meeting with Mrs. María Consuelo Loera, mother of Joaquín, El Chapo, Guzmán.
Third, the authorities are obliged to prevent the fomenting of acts of violence in our country, as well as to publicly praise a convicted criminal, let us remember that the Apology of Crime is sanctioned in article 208 of the Federal Penal Code.
But what is the defense of crime? They are individual or collective acts, by which illegal actions are tried to be justified, be it through words, music or art. It is a public praise of an act declared as illegal or criminal.
Mayor López Elenes has softened the issue. Hopefully we become aware of the implications of promoting violence, and instead promote other artistic or cultural manifestations in the aforementioned museum in the region.
