LATINA. Extremely serious accident at work this afternoon on a farm in the province of Latina, near Borgo Santa Maria, where a 30-year-old Indian worker cutting hay had his arm detached from a machine and suffered other serious fractures. Adding to the horror of the accident is the fact that, instead of being helped by his employers, he was dumped like a bag of rubbish near his home. The report and the news of the serious episode came from Flai CGIL, which with the general secretary of Frosinone Latina immediately rushed to the scene to see what had happened and how to help the people involved. The man was transported by air ambulance to Rome.
«I was contacted by a worker who sent me a photo of a severed limb – says Hardeep Kaur, general secretary of Flai Cgil Frosinone Latina – explaining that it was an accident that occurred to a fellow worker, who was dumped in desperate conditions on the street from a 9-seater minibus. It’s not a horror film, unfortunately it’s all true. Here we are not only faced with a serious accident at work, which is already alarming and avoidable in itself, here we are faced with the barbarity of exploitation, which tramples on people’s lives, dignity, health and every rule of civilization. We will guard these fields, these roads, these villages and districts every day and for the next few weeks there will be many of us, because we cannot work in these conditions.”
Now the Latina prosecutor’s office is investigating for very serious injuries. The man, while working on a machine, was seriously injured, losing an arm and also lacerating both legs. Socco is now in hospital. The episode occurred in the afternoon between 4pm and 6pm. Investigations are underway by the police who are interviewing several witnesses. His contractual position is also being examined.
«A worker lost an arm while working in the fields in Latina. He was brutally dumped from a minibus instead of being rescued. This is not a banal accident at work, this is pure slavery, horror, inhumanity. This is gangmastering. I will present a parliamentary question and ask for the anti-mafia commission to be convened because this is the mafia. In Italy there can be no space for any form of oppression and slavery. And it is Parliament’s duty to deal with the case of this injured and exploited worker”, said Raffaella Paita, national coordinator of Italia viva and member of the anti-mafia commission, in a note.
