The atypical nature of Monte Carlo discourages teams from bringing updates, but not Mercedes. In the Principality, the Brackley team shows off a further touch-up to the floor, after the changes already made for the races in Miami and Imola. The house of the Star carries on a fragmented development strategyunlike Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren who have so far brought news en masse.
The bottom swells
The tweak to the W15 for the Monaco event affects the entrance section of the Venturi channels of the fund. In detail, the leading edge near the frame appears swollen, with a camber that forces the flows channeled under the bottom to accelerate. As the air gains speed it loses pressure, generating greater local aerodynamic load, but also helping to energize and stabilize the flows that flow under the car, in favor of a more constant yield.
The Monte Carlo update follows those commented in the last two appointments. In Miami on the Silver Arrows a retouched surface had debuted along the external edge, with an increase in vortex generators along the central rise, while for Imola the trend of the Venturi channels had changed. Monaco thus completes the first development package, the aim of which is to improve lap times not simply by increasing load, but by means of a wider operating windowbetter balance and overall more predictable behavior.
Development in installments
Mercedes stands out from its rivals for its development approach in this first part of the season. While Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari debuted large packages of updates en masse, denoting an organic and overall design, the Brackley team preferred to gradually introduce small innovations. The ‘unpacking’ of the updates is partly due to the desire to anticipate the arrival on the track of new parts as much as possible, but it also denotes a specific development, with detailed and targeted changes rather than a general evolution. The hope is that the approach confirms what was declared by the team members, who are now optimistic that they have a greater awareness of what is happening in the car.
