Power went out around 3 pm, Brasília time; supply had been normalized to 80% of the city by 6:40 pm
The city of Manaus (AM) suffered an electrical blackout this Sunday afternoon (April 14, 2024) after the shutdown of a substation and one of the transmission lines that bring energy to the municipality. Consumers in several neighborhoods were without power for hours.
The 2 circuits of the Lechuga-Manaus line, owned by Manaus Energy Transmission, stopped working at 2:56 pm Brasília time (1:56 pm local time). The causes are still unknown.
According to the Amazon Energya distributor in the region, the outage interrupted the energy supply to 85% of consumers in Manaus, in addition to the cities of Iranduba, Manacapuru and Presidente Figueiredo.
Responsible for operating the transmission lines of the electrical system, the ONS (National System Operator), reported that the shutdown interrupted the supply of an electrical load of 400 MW to the Manaus region.
The ONS carried out procedures to reconnect the load, starting the resumption at 3:31 pm. However, at 4:09 pm, when part of the load had already been turned on again, the Lechuga substation, which is about 10 km from Manaus, also turned off.
The unit was turned back on and, according to the entity, around 80% of the energy had already been restored to the Manaus region by 6:40 pm. There were only a few operations left to be carried out by Amazonas Energia to return 100% service.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, determined the installation of a situation room to monitor the energy supply and understand the causes of the occurrence. A report will be prepared to analyze the incident, focusing on identifying the root cause that led to the dismissal.
The ONS and the responsible agents will investigate the causes of the occurrence.
