A 40-metre yacht has sunk in the sea off the coast of Italy. A Coast Guard video documented the incident.
Crotone – The footage from the Italian Coast Guard is impressive – it shows the sinking of a 40-meter yacht in the sea. First the motor yacht has a difficult lateral position, then the stern disappears into the water until only the tip of the bow can be seen and then everything disappears into the water – nine nautical miles off the Calabrian coast in the Gulf of Squillace (Italy). It is the end of a salvage attempt. The sea is rough and the wind howls.

However, there is also good news: the Italian crew and passengers on board the “Saga”, consisting of ten people, were rescued. The motorboat was flying the flag of the Cayman Islands, reports the Italian news agency Ansa. It is said to have been from Gallipoli (Lecce) on the way to Milazzo.

Problems then arose off the coast of Cantanzaro in the Ionian Sea: water ran into the stern of the 40-meter ship. The captain informed the port authority. Crotone’s CP 321 patrol boat, which is actually used by the Frontex agency, was then sent to the area.
The patrol boat immediately picked up the first four passengers and one crew member. A tugboat from Crotone was tasked with salvaging the yacht. The rescue operation began at dawn. The ship was to be towed into port. Four crew members, including the captain, first left the luxury yacht.
Italy: salvage operation fails – superyacht sinks in the sea
But the situation worsened: the weather and the constant tilting of the yacht made recovery extremely difficult, according to reports. When water entered the stern, the yacht sank in no time. The salvage operation had to be abandoned. An investigation is now to be launched to determine the cause of the sinking. Further details about the “saga” and the owners are still unknown.
At the beginning of August 2022, a fatal yacht accident off the Costa Smeralda (Sardinia) made headlines. A German manager (61) with a British passport died in an accident on a trip with his 21-meter yacht.
Previously, a yacht accident shocked Italy in July: a 20-meter motor yacht collided with a sailing ship. The sailboat was “practically split into two parts”. (ml)
