President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Tuesday, 2, that the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, has no intention of running for political office in 2024, but that she can run in the 2026 election.
Sister of Marielle Franco, Rio councilor murdered in March 2018, Anielle today joined the PT in the presence of Lula and, behind the scenes, is the name being considered to occupy the position of vice on the ticket of Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD), sought by the PT members. In practice, however, Lula suggested that this will not happen.
“I am sure that Anielle Franco has no intention of running for political office in 2024. Anielle wants to be a minister until the last moment (of the mandate). But, when it's over, there's an election in 2026 and you can gossip about it. Then she can prepare and compete”, said Lula.
Paes' political group resists the onslaught of Lula's party. On the PT's side, however, in addition to Anielle, potential names to occupy this position are Tainá de Paula (PT), current secretary of the Environment of Paes, and the municipal secretary of Social Assistance, Adilson Pires (PT), who He was Paes' deputy between 2013 and 2016.
A fourth name that appears behind the scenes is that of André Ceciliano, former state deputy and former president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), now secretary of Federative Affairs at the Ministry of Institutional Relations.
Within the PT, Paes' chances of being re-elected mayor this year are considered high, but will leave the position to run for state government in 2026, leaving the mayor's office to his deputy. Therefore, the strategic content of the vice-president vacancy on the ticket of the current mayor of Rio.
Preparation
In the speech, Lula recommended that Anielle Franco attend some PT meetings and read its manifesto in order to get to know the party, which Lula defined as a party “different from any other in the world”, with strong control of the membership base.
“You (Anielle) it's young. Obviously you will learn that politics is a pleasant thing, but that life is painful. I lost a good part of my youth organizing the political life of this country, but I gained it by helping to organize the party that governed Brazil for the longest time”, said Lula to his new supporter.
Anielle, who spoke earlier, cited her murdered sister's political legacy, but stated that her activism began before the episode, being linked to her trajectory as a black woman.
“My body has my entire trajectory up to here. I'm not going to change to fit into politics. Politics needs to change to understand our bodies, what we are. There’s no point in wanting to change,” she said.
The new PT member also received a greeting speech from the first lady, Janja da Silva, who defined her as a “friend”. Lula also noted that she does not attend PT membership events, especially when she holds the presidency of the Republic, but that she made exceptions for Marta Suplicy and, now, Anielle.
