Argentina is experiencing this Wednesday the hangover of the massive defense of public higher education in the streets in the face of the economic adjustment imposed by the Government of Javier Milei, who interpreted the marches throughout the country in a political key.

The estimated numbers varied among the 100,000 protesters who, according to security forces, gathered in the Plaza de Mayo – where the Casa Rosada (seat of Government) is located and where the Buenos Aires march concluded, with the reading of a statement. – and the 800,000 estimated by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), which raised participation throughout the country to one million people.
Although the Ministry of Human Capital announced late on Monday what, days ago, it presented as an agreement reached with the National Interuniversity Council (CIN), the deposit of 10,075 million pesos (about 11 million dollars at the current official exchange rate ) for 100% of the operating expenses of national universities, the march continued.
Among those attending the Buenos Aires demonstration were the Peronist governor of the province of the same name, Axel Kicillof; the former Minister of Economy and Milei's opponent in the last presidential elections, Sergio Massa; the president of radicalism, Senator Martín Lousteau; and the left-wing deputies Myriam Bregman and Nicolás del Caño.
Along with the student and teaching unions of the public university, several private centers also supported the call.

“Public universities are not going to close. It is not on any agenda nor will it be on our agenda to close a public university. We are the greatest defenders of public education,” said the spokesperson, who accused political and social leaders of install that idea among the protesters.
