Toni Kroos, the star of the German national team, said that he would be happy if he succeeded in winning the 2024 European Nations Cup title on his country’s soil. Kroos retired from international football after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but returned to the national team during the last international break last March.
Kroos will retire from the game after the European Nations Finals, after his club bid farewell to Real Madrid after winning the Champions League title for the 15th time in the club’s history. Kroos said after the end of the German national team’s training in preparation for facing Scotland three days later at the opening of the tournament: “It would be strange to end my career with the Champions League and the Nations Cup, but I would love that.”
He added: “We are capable of defeating any team,” but he stressed the need to focus at the present time, indicating that he is only thinking about the first match. Kroos continued: “The match against Scotland will not be decisive, but it will be important. We must be on time.”
Kroos believes that playing the tournament in his country will be something special, but he pointed out that this will result in additional pressure, stressing that the players must deal with the matter wisely. Kroos said: “Playing the tournament on your home soil is really special. We have a great responsibility for the atmosphere in the country in the coming weeks. We know that pressure and we are trying to enjoy everything.”
Despite his successful career, during which he won the Champions League six times and the World Cup once, Kroos stressed that he still wants to win more trophies. He added: “Of course I look forward to more. This was in line with my decision to return because I still want to succeed. If I had not had an idea about that, I would not have returned.”
Kroos’s three children, Leon, Amelie and Finn, will attend the Scotland match, with high expectations that are normal for children. Kroos said jokingly: “They haven’t asked me about the plan yet. They don’t really care about it, but they expect to win. Unfortunately, success has spoiled them, which means they haven’t watched the national team much in recent years.”
