White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan revealed on Wednesday (21) that the Israeli government informed him, during his recent visit to Tel Aviv, about plans to reduce civilian deaths from the Gaza Strip in the city. by Rafah.
Without giving details of that strategy, Sullivan said at a news conference that Israeli authorities had notified him about “adjustments Israel has made to plans to achieve its military objectives, taking into account harm to civilians.”
For months, the US has been asking Israel to present a “concrete plan to avoid civilian casualties in the event of any large-scale military operation in Rafah”, which is located in the extreme south of Gaza, close to the border with Egypt, where residents who fleeing Israel’s offensive in other parts of the Palestinian enclave have taken refuge.
Sullivan said the US will now watch how events unfold and how these plans will be implemented to reduce the number of casualties in the Gaza Strip.
The advisor stated that “there is no mathematical formula” to judge the results of these plans, but that the Biden administration will evaluate “whether there is a large amount of death and destruction resulting from this operation or whether it is more precise and proportional.”
Sullivan met in Tel Aviv, among others, with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who showed him “approved and implemented” plans in Gaza to protect civilians from military operations like the one in Rafah, Israeli officials reported this week .
Sullivan also met with War Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz, a political rival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and War Cabinet Observer Minister Gadi Eisenkot. According to the White House, he also had a separate meeting with opposition leader Yair Lapid. (With EFE Agency)
