The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, received this Monday (22) a delegation from Iran, led by the secretary general of the World Assembly of the Ahl al-Bayt, Ayatollah Reza Ramezani, with the aim of strengthening diplomatic and commercial relations between countries, mainly in the energy sector, due to sanctions applied against the parties by the USA and European Union in recent years.
Ramezani was received at the Miraflores Palace, the seat of government, by Maduro, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Yván Gil, and the Minister of Transport, Ramón Velásquez. The objective of the meeting, according to state television broadcaster VTV, is to strengthen strategic relations between the two countries “in favor of the people”.
In other words, the diplomatic visit takes place with the purpose of reaffirming more than 10 agreements signed in June last year by Maduro and his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, in the petrochemical, transport, mining and other areas, with which they hope to multiply bilateral cooperation over the next 20 years.
In February, Iran's oil minister, Jabad Owji, visited Caracas to monitor the bilateral energy alliance between the regimes.
Iran has become one of Venezuela's main allies in recent years, especially since 2020, when the South American country experienced a gasoline shortage and turned to Tehran to buy fuel.
