Foreigners The share of inventors in the patent applications of Finnish companies and communities has already increased to 60 percent, says the Institute of Economic Research.
Patent applications included inventors from 68 different countries, and the share of foreign inventors in applications has grown throughout the 2010s. More than a fifth of the applications involved both Finnish and foreign inventors.
“According to international studies, highly educated immigrants strengthen the ability to innovate and promote economic growth. International innovation cooperation has probably been an important factor in the relatively strong productivity growth of Finnish industry in the 2010s”, says the research director Heli Koski in the bulletin.
Finns companies’ patent applications are focused on industry. According to the study, productivity development in the service sectors has been clearly weaker.

In order for the economy to grow, according to Koske, it is important to ensure that political actions support the utilization of international know-how and cooperation in the service sector as well.
Research director Koski analyzed patents applied for by Finns from the European Patent Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2010–2021. Most of them are made by companies and communities, but there are also individual people.
About statistics it appears that foreign inventors and international cooperation play a significant role in Finnish technological development.
The United States has been Finland’s most important innovation cooperation country, but Germany, Sweden and China have also been important partners in the development of patented ideas.
