in India the court requires the country’s government to declare a national emergency due to the scorching heat. In several cities in India, temperature readings have recently reached over 45 degrees.
India has not released national figures on deaths from the heat wave, but the eastern state of Bihar said on Friday that at least 14 people had died due to the heat in the previous days.
The high court of the western state of Rajasthan ruled on Thursday that the authorities have failed to protect people from the heat.
“Due to the extreme conditions caused by the heat wave, hundreds of people have lost their lives this month,” the court ruled.
According to the law, India should declare both the current and future similar heat waves as a state of national emergency, in which case the mobilization of aid would be possible as in the case of floods, for example.
